The Historic Center of Mexico City was built on the ancient lake of Mexico.

The Aztec Empire’s governing center, which still preserves the elements of the urban structure of the pre-Hispanic city, as in Xochimilco, where the Aztec-originated lake system survives.

For its historical and cultural value, for being an exceptional example of urban settlement, for having witnessed the fusion of two cultures, inscribed on the World Heritage List on 11 December 1987.
