This emblematic hill located on the outskirts of the Historic Center currently houses the Cerro de las Campanas Museum, the Maximiliano Chapel and the monument to Benito Juarez. It has the name of National Park and its name comes from some stones on the hill that when hitting them remember the ringing of the bells.
The Cerro de las Campanas represents the end of the struggle between the Empire and the Republic, as it was the place where Maximiliano de Habsburgo, Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía were shot in 1867.
The Chapel of Mercy was inaugurated in 1901 at the request of Franz Joseph of Habsburg, Emperor of Austria and brother of Maximilian, who asked for it to be built right on the spot where the firing squad had been carried out in order to commemorate the death of his brother.
In 1967, the 13-meter-high sculpture of Benito Juárez designed by Francisco Olaguibel was placed. On the other hand, the Cerro de las Campanas Museum has five permanent rooms that are supported by interactive multimedia, computer and telematic elements and audio and video instruments.
