GONZÁLEZ ORTEGA MARKET

This construction began in 1861 at the instruction of General Miguel Auza, who was acting as Acting Governor of Zacatecas in his second year. The objective of building a market was to provide security and convenience to buyers and sellers.

This building was preserved until 1886, as it was rebuilt by the then Governor Marcelino Morfin Chavez, the new building consisted of three floors, where the lower floor was used as warehouses and the two following floors were used as shops, thus its operation until December 8, 1901 that a devastating fire occurred that ended the market leaving everything in ruins.

The government took charge of the reconstruction and reopened its doors on December 22, 1902. Over the years the market has been called the “Mercado Principal”, or “Fruit Market”, and now known as the “Mercado General Jesús González Ortega”.

At present the market offers a wide variety of products as it has cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, silver and fur shops.
