Monument to Independence

The monument is located in the Plaza Independencia, the central point of the city, ordered to erect originally to hold a bust of Carlota I, the empress declined the honor, suggesting that the monument be dedicated to the Independence of Mexico. A bronze eagle was placed in 1868 and was struck down by lightning two years later. The current sculpture was placed in 1981, after 111 years in which the column was empty.
