It was the first building of religious worship built in Queretaro, after Conín controlled the place and started the Spanish settlement, in addition to serving as a hub for the urban development of the city.
In the upper part of the façade you can see a high relief where a scene of the apostle Santiago appears in his dedication to Matamoros, because it is said that it was on a hill near what is now the city of Queretaro that the Spaniards had an apparition of Santiago Apóstol, which is why the city bears his name.
The Convento Grande de San Francisco, became for almost three centuries the waters of two cultures because it was in the geographical and social middle of the Indians and the Spanish people, serving the two groups as the guiding axis in every sense.
The temple of San Francisco served as the cathedral of Querétaro between 1865 and 1922. The building that occupied the old convent is today the Regional Museum, famous for its pre-Hispanic hall, its viceroyalty hall and its different spaces that tell the story of the most important events in the history of Mexico.
