Temple and former Convent of the Holy Cross

Founded by Fray Antonio Lináez at the end of the 17th century, as a school to evangelize northern Mexico.

The evangelizing caravans led by Fray Junípero Serra, resulted in the foundation of 21 missions, most of which are preserved and cover Querétaro to Upper California.

The former Convent of the Holy Cross was the protagonist of important events in the history of Mexico. When the Independence movement began, the convent was the prison of the corregidor of Queretaro, Don Miguel Dominguez, and a few years later it was taken by Iturbide to dominate Queretaro from the hill of Sangremal. Maximilian of Habsburg used the convent as his headquarters, later it was his first prison, until today, is the shelter of the famous “tree of the crosses” that tells the legend that in June 1697 Friar Antonio Margil de Jesus, When he came back from his mission and brought his walking stick with him on his long walks, he nailed it to the meadows of the now garden, from which a tree with thorns in the shape of a cross sprouted.
