Church of San Miguel Arcángel

The church of San Miguel Arcángel is the oldest church in Tlacotalpan, built in 1785. It is a unique example of the architecture of the place, which combines the neoclassical style with its wooden roof and clay tile.

It was the scene of riots by indigenous people who wanted to govern themselves, with total independence from the Spanish cabildo. Since 1810 it has preserved an image of Our Lady of Solitude, very venerated and known as the “Solita de San Miguel”, painted in oil with soft colours, probably from Oaxaca. The image was found in the hut of an Indian in the time of a terrible plague, the people begged him to end the disease. The image of the crucified Christ on the high altar is highly revered as well as ancient, although the headline of the church is the archangel St. Michael.
